"Rural Areas and Agriculture - Five Years since Poland's Accession to the European Union"
The Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has organized the international conference "Rural Areas and Agriculture - Five Years since Poland’s Accession to the European Union", which will be held on April 28 - 29 in Warsaw. The conference is intended to summarise five years EU enlargement specifically in the sectors of rural development, agriculture and the food economy. The fifth anniversary is an appropriate occasion to asses the achievements of EU – 12. The conference will also provide an opportunity to launch the National Rural Network recognised as an efficient instrument to enhance and secure the partnership of all stakeholders involved in the rural development. The first day of the conference is planned to be an interface between public stakeholders and scientists on the subject of the consequences of EU membership. It shall be opened with a plenary session and followed with three parallel focused discussions. In the plenary session we will discuss what have EU 12 contributed to agriculture and agricultural sector in the European Union. Panel sessions are devoted to issues of multifunctionality and coexistence of different agricultural models in the EU; liberalization, globalization and financial crisis and their impacts on the European agriculture; and the European integration in the fields of agriculture and rural development. Our speakers, besides Polish scientists and politicians, represent different institutions such as: Corvinus University of Budapest (Csaba Csaki), Catholic University in Leuven (Johan Swinnen), Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Timisoara, Romania (Cosmiin Salasan), Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), London (David Baldock), Institute of Agrarian Economics of Latvia (Andris Miglavs) as well as the representative of the European Parliament and DG AGRI (Jarosław Pietras). The second day of the conference will have a political orientation - therefore Ministers from other Member States (mostly EU-12) have been invited. Our speakers on this day will discuss the current perspective of the effects of accession. We will have presentation of Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development - Mariann Fischer Boel, 1st Deputy Minister of the Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic - Ivo Hlavac, Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament - Neil Parish, Deputy Director DG AGRI, European Commission – Jerzy Plewa, Head of the Unit G3, DG AGRI, European Commission, John Lougheed. We are certain that the conference will give an opportunity to discuss urgent European issues in the context of agriculture and rural development.
