Holestone YFC Bring Community Venue Back to Life

01/12/2011

Holestone Young Farmers Club, Doagh, has accessed funding through the NI RDP to bring a local venue back to life for use by the local community.

The group received funding of almost £50,000 from the Basic Services Measure of the NI RDP, through GROW South Antrim, to carry out building works to bring the Orr Owens Memorial Hall back into use for the local community.

Over the past 10 years the building had got to the point where there was damp, no running water, the heating system no longer worked and the bathroom and kitchen could not be used.

There was a need for a community venue which could be used by local people for a range of activities, from dancing and horse clubs to meetings and events.  The Young Farmers Club saw the opportunity to renovate the hall so it could be used again – and used to its full potential.

“The hall was not fit for use at all as a venue for activities or events and couldn’t be let out to groups because it was so run down.  The hall had deteriorated to the point that it needed complete redevelopment.  Now that works are completed we have a valuable community space that can be used by everyone.”  Heather Patterson, Holestone YFC
