Guide on NorthSouth Cooperation in Rural Development Launched

A new ‘North South Co-operation Guide’ to assist Local Action Groups, north and south, to undertake joint projects has been launched.

Michelle Gildernew MP MLA Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development in the north of Ireland and Pat Carey TD, Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs in the south launched the Cross Border Co-operation Project Guidance Guide which offers advice and guidance to Local Action Groups undertaking joint cross-border co-operation projects. The guide can be accessed from our download section.

The guide, which was launched at Farmleigh House, Dublin on 13th October, was produced by both the Rural Network for Northern Ireland and the National Rural Network in association with Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the southern Ireland Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs. Tracey Mc Nally of the Rural Network for Northern Ireland National Rural Network, said the guidance provides local groups with the information that they need to undertake cross border projects that benefit their communities. It will open opportunities to strengthen rural economies and improve the quality of life in rural areas. Minister Gildernew encouraged groups north and south to engage in co-operation projects, saying that ‘People in rural areas have always had to be innovative and resourceful. This Co-operation guidance coupled with the funds available under the rural development programme provide a real opportunity for people living in small or scattered rural communities to come together in a joint project, share their resources and achieve the scale necessary to delivery the outcomes they want and need for their areas’.
